Uranium Extraction Project
Northern States Metals successfully completed this demanding Atomic Energy product. This 40 ft long precision aluminum tube meticulously welded to a machined aluminum base is used to extract Uranium from the earth. Any defect in the tube, the weld or the machined base could result in catastrophic consequences. The work was completed at the NSM Youngstown OH 80,000 sq ft facility.
We are happy to report: No Contaminated Cities or Mushroom Clouds.

Weld Description

The Atomic Energy Commission product is to be welded with no more than 175 amps for temperature reasons. 

A 5356 alloy-welding rod is required for stronger and more ridged weld.  This product must be welded by an A.W.S.E. Boiler and pressure vessel certified welder in 2G & 3G (vertical and horizontal) positions.  I.D. numbers engraved in every part so that it is known who made them and who inspected them.  These numbers also help when testing.  Every part tested by pressurizing and looking for leaks.
