Tim Ryan visits Northern States Metals (flash video)

Just ask the people at Virtual Listening Systems, a manufacturer of high-end audio equipment.  With a product launch deadline growing nearer, VLS came to Northern States Metals with a part that other industry leaders could not manufacture.  The part required innovative fabrication to meet strict design requirements and internal tolerances.
The NSM staff was ready to meet the challenge.  Setting to work immediately and working closely with purchasing and engineering from VLS, the goal was to not only ensure product performance, but to make the part on time and cost-effective as well.  Using special sizing fixtures, NSM was able to guarantee the internal tolerances.
With a one-of-a-kind "three-hit-die", NSM punched needle-sized holes smaller than the thickness of the material and covering a throat depth of up to seven inches!  Northern States Metals then custom powder coated the product and shipped to VLS, who received a product ready for final assembly, thus allowing product shipment within days.
Execution had to be perfect for this program to come together.  There was no margin for error.  Twenty-eight years of NSM's experience provided the on-time and on-budget launch of a new product that others considered non-manufacturable.
